“I was the REO onboard the Navy tanker, the Paul Buck, for Operation Deep Freeze. Ham radio operation was better on the the ship than at the ashore station.”

AG6E’s career has been in commercial and military maritime communications. For his leadership skill and technical expertise, he was recalled by the Navy to serve an LDO (Limited Duty Office) in Haiti Earthquake Relief, in February of 2010.

Now Retired, he is involved with Battleship Iowa (BB-61) call sign NI6BB Amateur Radio Association and with the Merchant Marine ship, S.S. Lane Victory, in San Pedro. David teaches STEM classes, and actively participates with RPA’s (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) and AUV’s (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) which are areas of specialized robotics.

 

“I have had a ham license for over 60 years.  Currently, I am involved with the Veterans Administration, as a Communications Specialist and as a drone pilot in the Emergency Operations Dept.

I have been a sea-going radio officer – when we had such things.”

“How a Robot Can Use Sound to Navigate Underwater”

Fact: The salty ocean is not a RF-friendly environment. Radio-based technologies, such as GPS cell phones do not work, once you go a few feet underwater. Visible light rarely makes it beyond 1000 feet.

So how do underwater robots see, navigate, and communicate?

Answer: We will find out through the examples of student-built “robosubs”, named Dory and Flo.

Jim NO1PC was first licensed in 1970.   He has lived in Campbell, CA since 1992.  Jim created and moderates a fantastic amateur radio Elmer forum on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmateurRadioElmers/ and maintains a web-site of solid ham radio reference information at www.No1PC.org. 

Jim has worked in medical instrumentation, scientific instrumentation, broadcast, commercial and public safety radio, technical marketing, software product management.  His present career is Principal Computer Systems Analyst in NGC Enterprise Services in Sunnyvale. 

Jim owns/operates several UHF repeater systems in the area – CalNet 443.750, Campbell 442.175, an iconic site in San Francisco on 441.025, GMRS – as well as full HF capability at home and mobile.  His battery-powered home shack has enough ham and public safety capability to function as a mini-EOC for local to State emergency traffic.  Jim has been a CERT trainer and now fosters the program and communications planning with Campbell and local CERT teams and the local ARES/RACES team. 

Among all his other ham activities, Jim will be speaking at Pacificon 2019 in San Ramon, CA this month.

AO-85 Update: Do Not Access While in Eclipse

The auto Safe mode was disabled on June 24 and the transponder was 
turned on.  A few QSOs were made to verify that it would drop with 
inactivity.

Currently, the battery voltage is very low and it looks like a cell 
is prepared to give up the ghost.  Please do not use the satellite 
while it is in eclipse, even if you hear it.  Operations is not sure 
what will be usable if and when this cell fails completely.

In the meantime, please send reports to the AMSAT-BB.  THey are 
welcome and helpful.

Winlink provides its users email with attachments, position reporting, weather and information bulletins, and is well-known for its role in emergency and disaster relief communications.

Bob started Amateur radio with a technician’s license in Oct, 2015, he upgraded to general in Feb, 2017. He’s a member of the TRW, Aerospace, HARC, SBARC and ESARG radio clubs. In addition to digital modes, he’s helping Aerospace upgrade their club shacks with new equipment, including radios and antennas. Bob has done a few Summit’s On The Air (SOTA) hikes, including with Jeff Reed.
