Volunteers Wanted for Baker to Vegas in March

This is the 35th Annual Baker to Vegas 2019

We need help!

Baker to Vegas is a 120-mile relay run, there are 20 stages. This is held every year in March. Runners are police officers from around the country and from other countries.

Currently, there are 270 teams that participate in this event. There are over 6000 runners and support staff, several hundred Family members, friends, Thousands of Race volunteers, like the W6TRW amateur radio club.

There are two websites that would explain what goes on,

It is up to the amateur radio operators to keep track of all of the runners that are on the course.

About eight years ago W6TRW  amateur radio club got involved with doing radio communications for this event. Our club sponsors stage 18. It’s a special spot for us, it is located in the middle of a neighborhood so this stage must be silent.

We use radios to communicate and also computers.  We also use the clubs radio truck for this event.

This is one event that there is real emergency traffic taking place.

 Staffing:  We are looking for 7 more Volunteers and looking for an IT person.

This event takes place on March 23 and 24 of 2019

Mark has taught amateurs looking to obtain their Extra class license and is one of a dozen volunteers that coach athletes in East Texas Special Olympics long distance cycling. He trained 1 of only 4 in Texas who will be going to New Jersey for the U.S. Special Olympics National Games.

What is FT-8 Digital Mode?

Chris will demonstrate and share his Field Day experience with FT-8 Digital Mode

FT8 stands for “Franke-Taylor design, 8-FSK modulation” and was created by Joe Taylor, K1JT and Steve Franke, K9AN. It is described as being designed for “multi-hop Es where signals may be weak and fading, openings may be short, and you want fast completion of reliable, confirm-able QSO’s.

WA2KDL, longtime member, Chris has held numerous club leadership positions. His Ham Radio resume includes DMR hot spots, IRLP software (what you need to use it on the internet), SDR use for HDSDR & Linux SDR software and AMSAT Life Member, talked to both the space shuttle & OSCAR 6,7,8 working GSE for AMSAT OSCAR 16,17,18-19 use FOX Satellite, Field Day Band Captain 80M and MORE!

Bill Tynan W3XO Silent Key

It is our sad duty to inform the passing of Bill Tynan, W3XO.

William A. “Bill” Tynan, W3XO, of Kerrville, Texas, died on August 7, following a lengthy illness. A past AMSAT President and the editor of the QST column “The World Above 50 MHz” from 1975 until 1992, Tynan was 91.

USAF MARS

The Military Auxiliary Radio System, a US DOD sponsored civilian program consisting of primarily licensed ham radio operators interested in assisting the military with communications on a local, national, and international basis as an adjunct to normal communications.
MARS has a long history of service to the nation. Its members work by the slogan “Proudly serving those who serve.”

Deane Bouvier, N5DQ

Deane was born in New Orleans, the youngest of three boys. His father was a TV repair technician, so Electrical Engineering in college was a natural. In college, he joined the ROTC and finished a 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force. Then Deane joined Hughes Space and Communications (now Boeing Satellite Development Center) and spent 18 years as an employee and another 4 years as a consultant building communications satellites.

Now fully retired, he is busier than ever; volunteering for Little Company of Mary Medical Centers, the City of Torrance and Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Service. All of these activities are centered on improving disaster communications for our community.

Understanding the linked multi-repeater

systems of Southern California

In about an hour we’ll compare and contrast such linked systems as:  PAPA; DARN; Cactus Intertie; Condor; WIN; RABBIT; EARN; SCIRA; and more.  Diana, AI6DF, previously served as President and later Coordination Board Secretary for the 220 MHz Spectrum Management Association of Southern California.  Several of these linked systems use the 222-225 MHz amateur band.

Everything you’ve always wanted to know….Diana will answer all your Questions about Southern California repeater systems as well as give us an update on ARRL activities.

 

In addition to serving as ARRL Los Angeles Section Manager Diana is President of the Palos Verdes Amateur Radio Club, District Communications Officer for the L.A. County Disaster Communications Service Lomita and South Los Angeles Districts, and an active participant with the PVARC’s annual “Islands on the Air” (IOTA) DXpedition to Santa Catalina Island.

The SMC Heritage Center is an area of historical exhibits and monuments to the Air Force space and missile development, located both indoors and outside of the Schriever Space Complex at L.A. Air Force Base in El Segundo.

Lunch will be available at a reserved area of the base patio. Limited Parking, please carpool.

Phil Bergeron N6PB Silent Key

It is our sad duty to inform all W6TRW members of the passing of Phil Bergeron, N6PB. Phil became a Silent Key (SK) after a long battle with several medical issues. Phil’s wife, Kathy passed away earlier this year. Phil is survived by his son, Robbie.

A donation to the ARRL or other amateur radio organization in Phil’s honor would be appropriate, as his family is not accepting flowers or remembrances.
